Packt like sardines in a 3G box

Sitting in LAX tethered to a power outlet, I’m going to let the virtual keypad’s corrective spelling do its thing. At Cliff’s suggetion I took the scenic route here. I went north to go south and avoided congestion in the process. Again I have an hour plus of downtime in an airport, but it’s a good thing; I’m sure we’re still at orange threat despite the wiretap green light bill passing today. Want to bet we are orange for the rest of W’s term? Politics is probably a bad topic, as it is at the sagebrush. What a longhorn is doing in Calabasas makes no matter to me.

Rambling on, I was behind a Buddhist monk in the security line. As I waited patiently, he asked me to go on ahead. Damn, I should have known better than to try to be emptier than him. Now I am marveling at the hustle and bustle, the quest for relevance within shortening attention spans, and the undoubtable commoditization of power outlets and networks. We joked today about giant cellphones in the 80s, and how children will not only find vinyl records incredible but also CDs, and possibly even the metaphor of a keyboard. That guy is so old he knows touch typing. He even remembers white out.
“have yourself a good time its nothing at all”.

An Event Apart

I flew into Boston a bit sleep deprived from attending a concert. I was in “fan” mode, and prepared to apply a rock and roll metaphor to An Event Apart. The speakers delivered skillfully, so my expectations were met.

What set it apart was how engaged the speakers and attendees were. I simply hadn’t anticipated the energy and healthy level of participation. Accessible, friendly, social, enthused…that we were.

Some mobile blurbiage from the event, cleaned up a bit:

Waiting for the start of day one. Saw Eric Meyer at breakfast.

A/V booth: “Introduce yourself!”

E.M.: “I’m just an MC. Call me J style.”

“Tell them Eric Meyer says you need more.” -in response to my question about style sheets sans context. Now I’m empowered.

Douglas Bowman sat with us at lunch. Then Doug spoke on scale.

Excellent talks all around. We went to the party at Stix, hosted by Media Temple. Fun. It was Jason Santa Maria’s birthday. Talked to Christopher Fahey. Afterward Mirick, John and I met Borys. We went out for Tuna tartar and what not.

A great day 2 that ended with getting my name drawn for critique with Jeffrey Zeldman on stage (no really). Spoke more after with Doug, Christopher and David Sleight, whose cadence reminds me a bit of Chris Brown. Then Mirick, John and I went north for some Italian food. Va bene.
