Waiting to board a plane in Philly. Mom, Dad and I had good time sightseeing today. Around here it’s all about the Benjamin. Having been to both Boston and here for the first time this year, I have a better sense of what America is about. Time to board.
We celebrated Mom’s birthday and Fathers Day. This South Carolinian romp was the 78/378 circuit. Included Carolina Barbecue, a trip to the posh Persimmon Hill (Johnston?) and the rural drive back to Georgia. There was fantastic electricity in the skies. No rain or audible thunder, just a show of glowing clouds and horizontal lightning. I put the top down. Couldn’t miss it.
SALUDA, S.C. - Lula Cornelia Snyder Coleman, 92, of 203 North Jefferson Street, died at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Married to Billy Cohen Coleman for 63 years, Mrs. Coleman was born January 8, 1916, the sixth of nine children of the late Alfred Franklin Snyder Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Cork Snyder of Greenwood. She attended Greenwood schools and in 1937 graduated from Lander College in Greenwood and did graduate work in English at Duke University in Durham, N.C., and at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. She taught school at Bush River in Newberry County, at Swansea in Lexington County and at Saluda in both the elementary and high school levels. She also taught one of the first special education classes in Saluda. In 1940, she took her class to an assembly program in the gymnasium at Saluda High School where 24-year-old Sen. Billy Coleman was preparing to speak, and when Coleman saw the young brunette Miss Snyder in the crowd, he forgot his speech. The couple was married October 21, 1944, at South Main Baptist Church in Greenwood. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she served as head of the Missions Society and as a teacher of the Ida Crouch Sunday School Class. She also started a library and maintained a prayer garden between the sanctuary and the Sunday School Building at St. Paul. She served as local and state president and national officer of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and was the president of the Saluda County Mental Health Association. She was an active member of the Yellow Jessamine Garden Club, the Clemson County Extension Home Demonstration Club and the University of South Carolina Gamecock Club. She supported the Gamecocks in the stands for over 50 years. Much more than her official memberships, she served the Lord by reaching out in Christian love to those less fortunate, bringing home children with special needs to give them extra attention or gave generously to the sick or needy. She loved all kinds of flowers, gardened with a free spirit at all hours of the day and sharing cuttings of her plants with any and all who appreciated them. She read a chapter of the Bible every night, completing the book over eight times. But more than anything, she was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, always expressing her love in very unique and meaningful ways. She is survived by her husband of the home; a sister, Amanda Kate Snyder Gillison of Richland, a brother, George William Snyder of Spartanburg; four daughters and sons-in-law, Claire and Raymond Hesse of Aiken; Caren and Joseph Larate of Hendersonville, N.C.; Nancy Ann and Pat Wooten of Orangeburg; Julia and Marshall Johnson of Lexington, nine grandchildren, Benjamin Coleman Hesse of Athens, Ga.; Paul Joseph Larate of Atlanta; Carrie Hesse Atkins of Sevierville, Tenn.; William “Billy” Coleman Larate of Jenkinsburg, Ga.; Nancy Johnson Brown of Jacksonville, N.C.; Caren Elizabeth “Eliza” Hesse of Tempe, Ariz.; Patrick Coleman Wooten of Durham, N.C.; Lauren Julia Johnson and Julia CollinsWooten, both of Columbia; and five great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Elevator or Family Life Center funds, 102 East Butler Avenue, Saluda, SC 29138. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 2008, in St. Paul Methodist Church, with Dr. Tom Norrell and the Rev. Nels Ledwell of Litchfield Beach officiating. Burial will be in Travis Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ramey Funeral Home.
